How Can I Get a Hybrid Job While Growing My Fashion Business?

Dear Yvonne,

I am Ana. I am a recent graduate and I just concluded my service year. I have two bachelor’s degrees (Mass Communication as well as English Language and Literature), apt knowledge of Human Resource Management, and a genuine passion for fashion (I am a seamstress). My dilemma is I would like to get a hybrid job to sponsor my sewing business and also to create time to grow my brand but I am not certain how to go about it, because I am not sure of what career path to take. I do not want a 9 - 5, and I am looking forward to growing my fashion brand financially. Kindly, advise me on what steps to take career-wise.

Yvonne says,

Hi Ana, It’s exciting to have something that lights you up and to be growing a business in an area you’re passionate about. I’m sensing from your question that you want more financial stability to support your entrepreneurship endeavours. This financial stability can come in either a secure full-time job, part-time job, or through other means of income. You’ve also mentioned you don’t mind a hybrid job - it’s worth noting that hybrid roles could also be full-time or part-time jobs.

Firstly, consider what you need from a job at this stage (run a work values assessment). Then, what does your CV look like and what kind of job/role can it get you? Come up with a job search plan and prepare your job application materials (CV, cover letter, elevator pitch, LinkedIn profile). Also, think about freelance opportunities using platforms like UpWork. While you look for a job to supplement your income, revisit your business plan including your process, and the people involved in your business (stakeholders). What does your business need to survive and thrive in the short and long term? What does resilience in this phase of your life look like?

If you successfully get a job, how can you combine both and have them complement each other (can you find customers through your workplace, or if you find a job in fashion, will it improve your business experience)? Research shows that the higher the quality of questions we ask ourselves, the better the outcomes of our decisions. I hope these questions lead you to a favourable outcome.
