How Do I Transition from Accounting to the Culinary Industry?
Dear Yvonne,
I am writing to seek help in the transition of my career pursuit. I have encountered quite some challenges, and I sincerely need expert advice to be sure I am doing the right thing.
I graduated with a B.Sc. in Accounting but found passion in the food industry. I have gained some experience with running a side gig and did a certification in culinary and nutrition, respectively. But it's been challenging getting a job with my skills as the culinary industry does not give room to women because of the work hours. On the other hand, finding an accounting job requires me to present my certificate, which I currently do not have (I haven't collected it from school as it was delayed). I considered a second degree so I can move up in my career, however, the challenge of the age limit seems to be my current position. I need professional advice. I currently have certifications in the following: Professional Chefs Diploma, Culinary Art, Data Entry, Health Coaching Course CPD standard, Diploma in Food Processing and Post Harvest Mgt, and B.Sc in Accounting (in view).
Yvonne Says,
Hey love, First off, I want you to know that your journey isn’t a straight line, and it’s completely okay to pivot and blend your passions and skills. Here's what I'd suggest:
Leverage Your Unique Skills: You have a powerful combination: accounting and culinary skills. Think about how you can merge these worlds - perhaps in food business management, food finance, or starting your own culinary blog or business. This blend could set you apart in both industries.
Network and Get Creative: Yes, the culinary world has its challenges, especially with work hours. But get creative! Look for roles like food consulting, recipe development, or even health coaching in the hospitality, restaurant & food space. Networking with like-minded professionals & bloggers can open doors that don’t require you to fit into the traditional mold. Be humble enough to seek mentorship from successful or advanced food bloggers or culinary experts & restaurateurs.
Certifications Can Be a Game-Changer: If your B.Sc. certificate is a stumbling block for accounting roles, follow up on it, even if it’s delayed. In the meantime, continue to focus on what you love - culinary work - and explore roles that value your experience and certifications, even if they're outside the traditional pathAge Is Just a Number: I get it - age limits can feel like a roadblock, but don’t let that stop you! You’re not too old to pursue a second degree or a career shift. Many women thrive in their careers later in life. It’s about leveraging your passion, experience, and what makes you stand out.
Trust the Process: This may take time, and that’s okay. Stay focused on what excites you and aligns with your values. Consider looking for jobs in high-value restaurants - start somewhere!
You’re already doing the work, and the right opportunities will come! You’ve got so much to offer, and you’re on the right track. Keep pushing forward, and trust that this journey will lead you to something amazing! Big hugs, Yvonne
