Why Am I Not Getting Callbacks for Administrative Assistant Roles?

Dear Yvonne,

I’ve been trying to apply as an Administrative Assistant with the US consular whenever I see the job opening, and I have never gotten a callback. Please, what can I do differently to stand a chance to work with the consular?

I have over 5 years of experience as an Administrative Assistant in a different industry, however, I know I can do the job after going through the job description. Please, I genuinely need help on what they specifically look out for while vetting applications and what I can do to stand a chance. Thank you.

Yvonne says,

It’s great that you have experience and are actively applying for a position at the U.S. Consular. Rejection can be quite daunting but with persistence, you can learn quite a lot about what to do differently. Ensure to understand the specific requirements for government roles including the experience with government systems, and foreign language skills needed.

Then make sure you’re tailoring your CV and cover letter to mirror the job description and emphasize your administrative skills. Showcase your soft skills around diplomacy, cultural awareness and professionalism through your cover letter and personal brand. Stay persistent and strategic by networking with current and former employees, and tailoring your application for each position. Consider temporary or contract roles if they open up because these can help you get your foot in the door.

Finally, be patient - hiring for government roles can take time, so keep applying and following up politely after a reasonable time has passed. Wishing you the best of luck in your search.
