How Do I Pursue Multiple Interests Without Becoming a Jill of All Trades?
Dear Yvonne,
I am Emmanuella, a recent graduate of Biochemistry. I am currently completing my NYSC service year and considering a Master's in Neuroscience afterward (as I desire to understand why humans are the way we are). However, I would also like a tech career, because I dream of using science and technology to curate sustainable solutions that would drive policy and economic shifts. I am looking at product management and data analytics but I don't know if they would be the best fit for me. Please advise me on how to move forward with all these dreams without becoming a 'Jill of all trades, and master of none'? Thank you for your time. Thank you, Sisterly HQ, for the amazing opportunities you continue to share with women like me.

Hi Emmanuella, I’m excited that you’re pursuing a career in the sciences. Sometimes, we forget that ‘tech’ is also part of STEM, a lucrative group of careers. Pursuing a career in neuroscience already puts you ahead of the pack, and you only have to focus on gaining mastery. Most importantly, ask yourself which careers (neuroscience or product management) you actually have a solid WHY for. Seems to me like it’s the former.
These days, many science programs have tech electives, and your quest for mastery can lead you to research widely and improve your knowledge outside of the classroom. Remember, you can have and utilise advanced tech skills in whatever career you choose. You’d also need strong analytical and statistical skills to be an excellent neuroscientist, so there you have it. Rooting for you!
